[Interview] “We Will Continue R&D to Make A Global Maker Company”
CEO Lee Kyung-gam was appointed in 2012 when Musun Techwin was going through the toughest time and Lee focused on improving the internal problems. After handling the problems, Lee focused on external activities and actively participated in domestic and overseas exhibitions to show the presence of Musun Techwin.
Before becoming the CEO, Lee worked as a public officer at Ministry of Health and Welfare. Lee said “I have been especially interested in disaster safety products since I was a public officer. After retirement, one of my friends introduced Musun Techwin and I decided to become the CEO after a thorough consideration.”
Lee’s dream is to make Musun Techwin grow into a globally recognized maker. To accomplish his dream, Lee prioritizes securing the product quality. Since his appointment, Lee first founded a research institute through aggressive investment.
It was extremely are for a company to run own research institute instead of collaborating with other research institutes. At that time, many people expressed concern on whether Lee’s decision on research investment will result in unaffordable investment. Nevertheless, the research institute accomplished sales over KRW 2 billion last year and Lee’s investment and management policy led to huge accomplishments.
Lee said “Quality is the promise we made with clients and we desperately needed a technical research center to enhance the quality. We have been developing products based on continuous researches and our technologies are recently recognized abroad based on such efforts.”
Lee especially emphasized that “Our technical research institute not only develops technologies but also verifies and tests products for export. We already acquired KFI, KC certificate, and GIS certificate from Japan.”
With successful accomplishments from the technical research institute, Musun Techwin is now expanding to overseas markets.
Until recently, Musun Techwin was involved in the indirect export by supplying electric products to fire truck manufacturing companies for export and selling small amount of product to foreign buyers. Starting from this year, Musun Techwin made a goal of spreading its brand abroad.
Lee said “Special equipment such as lantern is widely used not only in firefighting field but also in military and police fields. Starting from South-East Asian countries, we are also targeting on South American regions such as Mexico that are experiencing a poor security condition. We are also currently negotiating with local buyers.”
According to Lee, foreign buyers are showing a favorable response for the excellent quality and competitive price. The Korean Wave led by K-POP is favorably influencing on Musun Techwin, too.
Lee said “Although the export market is sluggish due to prolonged COVID-19 situation, we are continuing conversation with local buyers via online. We will get prepared thoroughly this year and focus on civilian demands and export starting from the next year.”
Recently, National Fire Agency is working on development of standards for firefighting equipment. There will be about 60 newly developed apparatuses applied with standards and many of them are produced by Musun Techwin.
While some companies are disagreeing with the development of standards, Lee gladly agrees on the decision. Lee only hopes that the apparatus purchasing policy would be improved together with development of standards.
Lee said “There are many Korean companies that cannot compete with cheap Chinese products even with high-quality products due to bidding in the lowest price. I hope National Fire Agency to lead in improving the policy so that the products with excellent performance and safety can compete fairly in the market.”
